1. Building Outline
Main Building : Former Kanto Finance Department

Annex : Former Bureau of Labor Standards

2. History
1928 Built as Japan Cotton Corporations’ Yokohama branch
1945 Requisitioned by US occupation forces, used as distribution center
1954 Purchased by Japanese Government
1960 Main building became the Kanto Finance Department.
1964 Warehouse building became the Bureau of Labor Standards.
1993 Kanto Finance Department and Bureau of Labor Standards moved to newly built Govt. office building
1997 Temporarily used as a the District Courthouse.
2003 Acquired by Yokohama city
3. ZAIM Art Project
Temporarily used as a related base during the ‘International Triennale of Contemporary Art’ from August to December 2005.
4. ZAIM Re-loaded
Operated under the Yokohama Arts Foundation on a 2 year trial basis from April 2006 until March 2008 as a continued Tiennale base. Also with the purpose of supporting civic movements concerned with art and culture, and other young creative artists.
| 5. Yokohama City’s ‘Practical use of Historical Buildings Project’ |
As Yokohama City is promoting itself as a ‘cultured, artistic and creative city, it plans to preserve the historic buildings in the central city and to use it as a space for artists to exhibit and produce works.
Work is already under way on the former Daiichi Bank, the former Nihon Yusen Maritime Museum (BankART 1929), former Fuji Bank and the Bankokubashi Warehouse.
ZAIM as it is also a historic building (built in 1928) will be temporarily used as an art/cultural facility until a renovation plan is decided upon.
| 6. Yokohama Arts Foundation |
As and independent foundation the Yokohama Arts Foundation oversees the running of the Yokohama Art Museum, Yokohama Minato Mirai Hall, Yokohama Nohgakudo (Noh Theatre), Yokohama Nigiwaiza, Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse No.1 and others.
The main purposes for running the ZAIM Project are as follows:
To provide an environment that, with the cooperation of civic groups, is truly easy for artists and civic supporters to use.
The Yokohama Arts Foundation is also provides an outlet for the curators of the Yokohama Museum of Art, to express their artistic specialties.
