City of Kanazawa
Kanazawa began as a castle town for Maeda clan, of the Kaga han domain, some 420 years ago.
Successive feudal lords encouraged the spread of academic learning, crafts and performing arts, as means to lessen the potential for conflicts. Fortuitously as well, the city was physically untouched in World War II, and the entire townscape from the period of the Kaga domain remains - a historical landscape with a still-living tradition and culture.
The city endeavors to preserve that landscape and carry on its traditions, while generating creative culture and industry through the addition of innovative activities. In this sense, the city has placed "World City Kanazawa" at the center of municipal administration - the concept of a city that, although small, champions its own existence and radiates a unique brilliance to the world.
