The City of Yokohama has launched a series of 'Creative City' initiatives taking a distinctively Yokohama approach to capitalizing on creativity in the arts and culture, the aim being to make Yokohama even more attractive to visitors and residents. In July 2007, to offer extra support to the creative individuals driving the success of this project, municipal authorities and the Yokohama Arts Foundation combined to establish Arts Commission Yokohama (ACY) as a contact point to help artists and creatives pursue and present their work, and reside in the city while doing so.
This page outlines artist in residence programs run during 2006-08 in Yokohama's inner harbor area, primarily the Yokohama Artist in Residence International Exchange Program launched in earnest in 2007 by ACY and a number of Creative Core Area locations. We hope this booklet will aid the development of even better residency programs befitting Yokohama's burgeoning status as a hub of urban creativity.

1. Yokohama Artist in Residence International Exchange Program
This artist in residence program launched by Arts Commission Yokohama in 2007 in conjunction with the City of Yokohama aims to promote Yokohama by building city-to-city networks, mainly within Asia, and in future offering Yokohama-based artists opportunities to produce and present their work abroad in similar arrangements.
The exchange program works by partnering with art-related entities in the Creative Core Areas to offer artists from Japan and further afield the chance to pursue their practice in Yokohama.
2. Residency programs in the Creative Core Areas
As part of their day-to-day operations all the locations listed have their own individual residency programs offering artists places and support to pursue their practice. We published the booklet “YOKOHAMA ARTIST RESIDENCE PROGRAM 2006-2008” , who shows just how many artists and people in the wider creative industries have used facilities in Yokohama's Creative Core Areas, details of resident artists to date indicating the future potential of these facilities as artist workspaces.
Included also are comments from the director designed to help artists and other creative individuals prompted by this booklet to seek a workspace in Yokohama, explaining for example how to approach the relevant facilities.
